Meditation for Beginners

Some people meditate now and then and some people do it every day, even more than once. Superstar Hugh Jackman has said that he meditates for a half an hour twice a day, every day, and believes that has contributed to his success and how much enjoyment and fulfillment he gets from his everyday life.

Meditating might not make you a multi-talented superstar like Hugh Jackman, but it can give you a sense of relaxation, focus and preparedness. Just taking even 10 or 15 minutes once a day or whenever you feel you need it to stop and remove yourself from the rush of sights, sounds and worries that you face each day can help you feel more centered and calm.

It’s not necessary to have any special props like a gong, candles or chimes to properly meditate. All you have to do is sit comfortably and try to slow your mind for a while. Ohm, the sound made by many during meditation, is simply a way to make you focus on the word, the sound, the drawing out of the sound. You can use basically any word you want, or just make any sound, or none at all. But meditation for beginners is best with a mantra like ohm, simply because if you’re not making a sound, it’s all too easy for your mind to keep skittering along on all the things waiting for you once you’re finished.

Try it. Just say “oooohmmmmmmm.” Can you really focus on making that sound in the same volume, length and pitch over and over again while you’re thinking about how you might have trouble with the mortgage payment this month or what you’ll fix for dinner? It puts on your mental brakes and gives your mind a few moments of relative quiet that can help you slow down and think with more clarity when you’ve finished.
