DIY Garage Repair: How To Diagnose Your Roll Up Door

I really hate my garage door. It broke last week, and I had no idea what was going on. Come to find out, the roll-up door itself is broken. One of the panels or something is broken, and the repair can’t fix it. So instead of paying $60 to fix it, I’m going to spend a couple hundred to have it replaced.

Why and when it breaks down This isn’t a take down article against roll up garage doors. My door has been good to me for over six years without any maintenance. That’s a long time for a door that is opened and closed so much. But I was curious on how to diagnose the problems myself in the future and how to properly maintain it.

The first thing you’ll to check are the metal tracks. Usually, there’s nothing even wrong with the door itself. More than likely there is a dent or bump on the track that is making it difficult to open or close. A simple hammer and wooden block can cure that problem quickly and easily.

Now it’s time to make sure that the tracks are actually clean. Dirt build can also cause the door stick as it is opened and closed. So before you add any lubricant, clean the tracks first.

Third thing to check and repair after you’re done with that, ensure that all of the screws and bolts are tightened. After that is completed, lubricate all of the moving parts to ensure everything is moving smoothly.

Now after you’ve through the basic garage door repair checklist, and you’re still experiencing problems, then something is wrong with the actual garage door. More than likely you’ll have to replace, but bring in a garage specialist to make sure before you spend a couple hundred dollars on a brand new garage.

The one thing that most people fail to do time and time again is simple maintenance. I know some people don’t bother to take care of their own health so why should anyone expect most people to take care of their garage doors right, lol. Its simple preventative measures, but the sad truth is that most people simply overlook it or are just oo lazy to do the things that are supposed to be done. It helps out in the longer run, but takes more work in the shorter run.
