A Little About My Shag Rugs

I’ve been passionate about collecting shag rugs since before they were trendy (again) and I collect them in all kinds of materials. I like them in wood, sisal and even bamboo. While I visited Kenya, I even purchased a zebra patterned rug made from a real zebra.

When someone compliments my flokati rug purchased in Greece — the one with shaggy goat hair that is actually looking a bit old from being taken from here to there around the world — I always laugh. They compliment my trendy style even though I have always liked the rugs. When I was in Greece, I also purchased some smaller Hellenic-style rugs from a merchant on one of the islands for a handful of Drachma. (I bought them just before Greece switched to the Euro currency.) I never would have believed that now an NYC loft decorator would pay tons of money to have what I bought cheap for their stylish client.

Shags from Ganges to Greece

shag rugNot everyone is fortunate enough to have a job that requires traveling from country to country, which is the reason I have been able to collect rugs. However, if you dream of worldly possessions, then consider shopping for special items via the internet. Even flokati rug merchants have their own websites now. I’ve also seen websites designed by craftsmen as far away as Tibet.

People who have ever been to Lhasa (capital of Tibet) know that the phrase sounds a bit odd. The experience of buying a rug there is unique. Imagine bargaining for a good price on a rug, while watching a holy cow stroll by. Further, the people are bathing their children near by in regretfully polluted water in the sacred Ganges river and then you hear the modern sound of a cell phone. Meanwhile, a carpet trader, decked out in traditional robes, pulls out his computer to log onto the world wide web.

Our world has clearly gotten smaller as we all connect via technology and you can find any rug to your taste whether shaggy or wool on the Internet. It can be made anywhere in the world from Tibet to China to Turkey. Even New Zealand is not too far away to acquire something special and you do not even need to leave the house. Search around and find the area rug the fulfills your desires.
